The changing of the guard has begun in the prep football ranks.
We already knew Palo Alto and South San Francisco were looking for a new coaches after the retirement of veteran mentors Earl Hansen and Frank Moro, respectively.
Now Capuchino is seeking a coach for the second consecutive year after Joshua Horton was not retained. The Mustangs are looking for a frosh-soph coach as well. Cap went 1-9 on the varsity level in 2013.
Said Cap assistant principal in charge of athletics Margarita Navarro via e-mail: "Yes, we are looking for a new football coach for varsity and frosh-soph. The application is open until the first week in January and we will be interviewing the second week. We decided to re-open the position for next season. Coaches' contracts are only in place for one year."
Cap went 6-5 in 2012 under coach Adam Hyndman, including a 5-0 record in PAL-Lake play. But Hyndman was let go after the season.
CANADA TO COUGARS: Milpitas star senior running back Squally Canada committed on Saturday to Washington State, Canada said Sunday night.
Canada had earlier committed to Boise State, but de-committed before football season started.
He cast his lot with Washington State during his official visit to the school, Canada said during a layover in Portland, Ore.
“Washington State has been there all along but I really hadn’t heard that much about them before,” Canada said. “Then me and (running backs coach Jim) Mastro developed a relationship and I took my official visit there. I like how (remote) it is and how I’ll be able to focus on football. I also like the coaching staff and the team.”
Canada rushed for 1,916 yards on 219 carries and scored 24 touchdowns for the Trojans, who went 11-2 overall.
Milpitas was the CCS Division I champions and SCVAL-De Anza tri-champs. Canada rushed for 220 yards and scored four touchdowns in Milpitas’ 37-23 DI title victory against San Benito.
Canada also had offers from UNLV, San Jose State, Colorado State, Colorado and Houston.
HENEGHAN TO DARTMOUTH: Menlo School senior quarterback Jack Heneghan is Ivy League-bound.
Heneghan was admitted to Dartmouth University in Hanover, N.H. last week and that’s where he’ll attend after earlier committing to the Big Green.
“I feel good,” Heneghan said Monday morning. “I’m excited to continue my career as a student-athlete. I like the coaching staff and it’s a great academic institution. I’m excited to play there.”
Heneghan is a standout on the field and in the classroom.
The 6-foot-4, 218-pound signal-caller completed 189 of 337 passes for 2,974 yards and 37 touchdowns, with nine interceptions this season.
Heneghan has a 3.9 grade point average and scored a 2,280 on his Scholastic Aptitude Test.
The Knights star turned down an offer from the University of San Diego.
FORMER COLT TO CAL: College of San Mateo defensive lineman Trevor Kelly has committed to play football at Cal, said former El Camino High baseball coach Carlos Roman. Roman coached Kelly in baseball at El Camino, where Kelly also starred in football and wrestled.
Kelly (6-2, 305) had offers from Colorado, Fresno State, Illinois, Texas Tech and Western Kentucky, according to rivals.com.
CATHOLIC HOOPS: The second annual Catholic Schools’ Winter Classic is Saturday at Cal State East Bay starting at noon. There are five boys’ games and one girls’ game.
Here are the match-ups: Moreau Catholic vs. St. Patrick-St. Vincent (girls) noon; Valley Christian vs. St. Patrick-St. Vincent 1:30 p.m.; Central Catholic vs. St. Francis, 3 p.m.; St. Mary’s (Stockton) vs. Serra, 4:30 p.m.; Moreau Catholic vs. Marin Catholic, 6 p.m.; Riordan vs. St. Joseph Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m.
Tickets will be sold at the door. The are $10 for adults and $7 for kids for an all-day pass.
TITLE GAMES TELEVISED: The CIF-State football bowl title games Saturday involving both Sacred Heart Prep and De La Salle will be shown on Comcast live from the StubHub Center in Carson.
The SHP Division III game against Corona del Mar-Newport Beach will be telecast at noon on SportsNet California.
The De La Salle Open Division game against St. John Bosco-Bellflower will be shown at 8 p.m. on Comcast Sportsnet Plus.

FUTURE BULLDOG: Casa Grande running back/outside linebacker John Porchivina has committed to Fresno State, according to his Twitter account.
Porchivina had a monster season, rushing for 1,681 yards and 20 touchdowns, catching 24 passes for 321 yards and five scores, averaging 6.2 tackles per game, sacking the QB 11 times, intercepting three passes, recovering one fumble and causing four fumbles.
