Weekly Recap: Batavia’s Glenn Albanese tosses complete game to beat Marmion

April 28, 2016

This week in Chicago high school baseball, we’ve seen more upsets and dramatic finishes than the last couple weeks combined. With teams pushing for playoff positions, more of this is expected. The top teams haven't really separated themselves from each other.

There were plenty of sensational performances by the Windy City’s top players this week, but junior pitcher Glenn Albanese was nearly unhittable as he helped Batavia (9-5) solidify its playoff standing by beating Marmion 6-3 at Fifth Third BallPark Tuesday.

He pitched a complete game, struck out five and allowed five hits in seven innings. t. The 6-foot-6, Louisville commit challenged hitters with his fastball throughout. Albanese relied on his powerful arm (88-90 mph fastball) to force outs and strikeouts for most of the night. He used his curveball (71-74 mph) to fool opposing Marmion hitters late in the game as his fastball died a bit. Despite the three unearned runs allowed, Albanese went a full seven innings to earn the win.

The Bulldogs scored their runs in the second and third innings. Albanese added to his cause on offense by hitting an RBI single in the third.

Marmion notched its first run in the fourth and added another two in the fifth, but rarely challenged Batavia for the lead in this contest.
