St. Francis star Hewitt chooses UC Davis

October 5, 2015

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — St. Francis High senior basketball player Peter Hewitt has given his verbal commitment to sign with UC Davis he announced on Sunday.

Hewitt, a 6-foot-10 220 pound center, wanted to announce which school he will be attending before beginning his senior basketball season.

Hewitt took his official visit to the Davis campus this past weekend and informed Aggies coach and former NBA player Jim Les of his decision Sunday at Hewitt’s hotel.

“I really liked the coaching style, the academics and the whole college feel,” Hewitt said. “(Les) and I talked in his office on Sunday then I went to my hotel and thought about it for a while then I told him to come to the hotel and I told him.”

Hewitt, a second-team all-West Catholic Athletic League selection last year, said the ability to stay in California and have his family and friends watch him play went into his decision to join the Aggies.

“It was very important to stay in California because I love living in California,” Hewitt said. “I wanted to stay in California and Davis has a strong academic and strong basketball program.”

Hewitt is the second player from a talented Lancers team to announce his collegiate intentions.

Fellow senior Noah Stapes said last month that he will be attending Point Loma a Division II school in San Diego.

St. Francis, WCAL champions last year, will return four starters from that team that came within three Jake Killingsworth free throws from capturing the Central Coast Section Open Division title.

The Lancers along with Mitty are the early season favorites to capture the WCAL and CCS Open Division titles this year.

Hewitt called it a relief to have his decision finally over and is glad to be able to simply focus on school work and basketball now.

“I’m really excited and really relieved to be done with the recruiting process,” Hewitt said. “It’s going to be nice to be able to play and not worry right recruitment.”

With his decision behind him, Hewitt is ready to get back to work and help the Lancers claim a WCAL and CCS Open Division title.

Hewitt, who averaged nearly a double-double last season with nine points and 11 rebounds, said with so much talent coming back at St. Francis that expectations are very high this upcoming season.

“Our goal is to go to state and win,” Hewitt said. “With the talent we have coming back it’s realistic.”
