Walker shines at combine, eyes big senior season

July 31, 2015

While many of his classmates were probably enjoying their summer lounging on a beach, testing out the latest video games or maybe getting in those last few road trips with the family, Morian Walker was doing bench presses. Lots of bench presses.

Oh and he got his fair share of football work in as well, participating in the Blue-Grey West Super Combine July 11-12 at the College of San Mateo.

Walker, who is entering his senior season expecting to start at Valley Christian-San Jose at both running back and cornerback, made the most of his opportunity.

"This camp helped a lot with my overall stock as an athlete," Walker said. "When you compete against some of the best talent around and compete to a high standard, there is no way it can go unnoticed."

The combine featured NFL veterans Mark McMillian, Byron Evans and Ken Stills as well as former NFL coaches George Martinez and Artie Gigantino and former NFL trainer Pepe Villasenor.

According to the official scouting report, written by Sean Ceglinsky, the media director for Blue-Grey Football, Walker "increased his stock in the eyes of our coaching staff and scouts. Next stop could be the big stage in the Lone Star State."

The top prospects are chosen to play in a Blue-Grey showcase game in Texas later in the year.

In addition to his outstanding work at the combine, which saw him clear 185 pounds on the bench press 22 times, Walker has spent his summer working with an impressive array of coaches and fellow athletes.

"Coach (Mike) Johnson is taking my receiving game to another level," said Walker, referring to a mentor who has coached in the National Football League. "This week I've had the opportunity to work with Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire and Notre Dame WR (and former King's Academy star) Amir Carlisle as well. There has been a lot going into this summer to make my senior year the best possible on the field."

The Blue-Grey Combine is an exclusive event that brought together some of the top college football prospects from the Western United States. Walker has been in contact with the University of Wyoming and the interest appears to be mutual.

"Wyoming right now is high on my list and has caught my eye the most out of the schools I've been talking to," he said. "I'm in constant contact with the coaching staff and they tell me they can't wait to get me out there to help them win a Mountain West championship."

Walker expects to make his decision by the middle of football season. In the meantime, don't expect to see him lounging around on the sofa.
