P.A. announcers' clinic promises to show way

June 30, 2015

We’ve all heard high school public address announcers who gab all game as if they’re Vin Scully or are such homers they make opposing fans cringe or try to put so much panache into the pronunciation of names that nobody can understand them. Now, there’s a potential cure.

The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers (NASPAA) will conduct a football P.A. announcers’ clinic on July 25 at De La Salle High. Oakland Raiders’ stadium announcer Gary Williams is the clinician.

“This will be my fifth NASPAA P.A. Announcers’ Clinic,” Williams said via release. “It makes no difference if someone has been announcing for many years or is just getting started, the clinic has something for everyone. There is no better way to prepare for the season.”

The clinic is for adults and students who desire to improve their P.A. announcing skills. The do’s and don’t of announcing football will be discussed, as well as style, voice quality and delivery as well as a review of the various announcements made in a game.

Participants will also have an opportunity to take part in announcing exercises, including calling a segment of a football game shown on the screen. Williams will provide feedback.

Said CCS assistant commissioner Steve Filios on why the section promotes the clinic: "For the last several years we have used our web site to forward NASPAA clinic opportunities to our member schools so that they might encourage prospective PA announcers at their school site to learn about the art of announcing and so that more of our schools might be able to provide PA announcers for many of their sports."

Registration is 8:30 a.m. July 25 at the DLS stadium, with the clinic lasting from 9 a.m. to noon. Prospective participants may also register at www.naspaa.net. More information: Dave George 925-200-7133.
