Enochs-Modesto QB Munoz leads North to Rotary All-Star win

June 29, 2015

When we first saw Enochs-Modesto quarterback Shawn Munoz it was after his junior season at the 2014 Nike Camp at Laney College in Oakland. He had just turned in a very nice SPARQ rating of 100.20, which is impressive for a quarterback.

Not a lot of signal-callers can combine the five SPARQ elements of speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness, and score that high.

In his senior year the 6-foot-1, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback threw for 1,546 yards and 14 TDs, and ran for 722 yards and 10 more scores, but Munoz kind of fell off the radar screen with Enochs having a mediocre 3-7 season.

However, last Friday night he went out with a bang after leading the North to a 15-0 win over the South in the 30th Rotary All-Star Football Game at Golden Valley-Merced, a showcase of the top graduating seniors from the greater Modesto area of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section.

In a game dominated by turnovers and defense, the fleet-footed Munoz scored the game’s only TDs on a 1-yard dive and a 15-yard run that ended in an acrobatic somersault into the end zone. He finished with 50 yards passing and 45 yards rushing, and besides the two touchdowns he also ran in the 2-point conversion after his second TD run.

“It felt great to finish my high school career with a win in the Rotary game. I had a lot of fun,” said Munoz, who will attend Sacramento City College beginning this fall.

Atwater defensive back Sal Duran recovered a first-quarter fumble and also had a second-quarter interception.

The North caused four total turnovers with the other two coming on interceptions by Alec Barcellos of Los Banos and Jacob Mable of Turlock.

Most of Munoz’ passing yards came on a 30-yard reception by talented slotback Damarrio Hammonds of Patterson on the play before the 15-yard scoring run. Buhach Colony-Atwater running back Justin Stefani had 38 yards on five carries.

The North limited the South to 148 total yards behind some solid line play by Ken Hamel of Merced and Javier Perez of Pitman-Turlock, the same high school San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick attended.
