MURPH'S PLACE: Never dull moment in Scrempos home; Jacobson to lead El Camino football program

September 25, 2014

These are exciting and busy days in the home of Jason Scrempos, the Milpitas High football star and recent University of Washington commit.

Observers of the area prep football scene are familiar with the story: Scrempos, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound defensive end/tight end committed to the Huskies last Tuesday after making an unofficial visit to the campus the previous weekend.

Wrote Scrempos' mother, Sandy Meinikoff-Scrempos, to Prep2Prep a day after her son's commitment: “We are excited about his commit! UW has a great academic and football program and is the right fit for Jason. All the coaches are awesome!”

Then Jason Scrempos and Milpitas capped off the week with their exciting 31-17 upset victory against Valley Christian. More jubilation.

Friday night the Trojans play at Homestead and there is no rest for the weary as far as Sandy Meinikoff-Scrempos is concerned. She is the Team Mom and by mid-week was feverishly working to feed the Trojan football program at a team dinner scheduled for Thursday night.

Said Sandy by email: "We make dinner the Thursday before every game. This is for frosh-soph and varsity. Cooking for about 130 people. This week's menu is 130 chicken leg quarters, spaghetti, salad, rolls, and brownies. We have five parents cooking chicken, two making pasta sauce, two making pasta, and one baking brownies. The players, coaches and team managers really appreciate the dinners. We enjoy doing it for them!"

But wait, there's more. Sandy's youngest son Justin Scrempos -- get this! -- is in the eighth grade and is already 6-6, 280 pounds and still growing. He plays for the NorCal Golden Bears, which is an unlimited weight league since young Justin is too big to play PAL or Pop Warner. He will enroll at Milpitas in the fall.

Still another son, John Scrempos (Class of 2013) was in the marching band at Milpitas.

Said Sandy: "For two years it was nice because at the Friday Night home games I was able to watch Jason play football and John perform during the game and the half-time show."

Sandy, incidentally, is a Terra Nova High grad. Her brother played football for the Tigers.

JACOBSON INTERIM EL CAMINO COACH: El Camino football coach Mark Turner, 38, as detailed on the PrepCat blog on Wednesday night, was arrested Tuesday night for alleged lewd contact with a 15-year-old female, according to news releases from the South San Francisco Union Schoool District and South San Francisco Police Department. The contact is alleged to have happened last summer.

The Castro Valley man, who was recently hired as part of El Camino High campus security, was being held on $150,000 bail and it is unknown if he posted bail. An investigation is underway, but South San Francisco Unified has already fired Turner and said he will not be back no matter the result of the police investigation, the district statement said. He has been the Colts' coach since 2010.

Longtime Colt assistant Eric Jacobson has been named as the interim head coach, Jacobson said by text to Prep2Prep late Wednesday night. Jacobson also helps run the El Camino High athletic department with A.D. Jeff Cosico, who was unavailable for comment.

Jacobson is dedicated, personable and perhaps best known for championing the refurbishment of the El Camino High football stadium that was completed last season, just in time for the annual Bell Game against intra-district rival South San Francisco.

Jacobson said he can't comment beyond confirming he is the interim coach. The Colts (2-1) are at Wilcox at 7 p.m. Friday in a non-league game.

Briefly: Aptos High softball coach Erika Campbell has resigned and has moved to Oakland, reports the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian ... Pete Fukuhara has been named the new Palo Alto baseball coach, reports the Palo Alto Weekly ... The Andrew Hill football team is at Leigh at 7 p.m. Thursday night in a non-league game.
