New coaches at St. Ignatius, Bellarmine

August 27, 2014

St. Ignatius and Bellarmine have made some important personnel moves.

St. Ignatius has named an interim basketball coach in Rob Marcaletti. Bellarmine has listed on its web site new coaches in Justin Johnson (soccer) and Bruce Frady (lacrosse).

Marcaletti has been an assistant at S.I. for 13 years, coaching on the underclassmen level for four years and spending the last nine on varsity. He assisted Tim Reardon last season.

Said S.I. athletic director John Mulkerrins via a release: “I am confident Rob will do an outstanding job continuing the success of the SI basketball program. He is a hard worker, has a very creative basketball mind, and is highly motivated to achieve at the top level. He will serve our student-athletes very well.”

Marcaletti replaces Tim Reardon (Class of 1986) after Reardon’s move to become SI’s new alumni director.

Reardon coached at S.I. for 23 years, coaching in the girls’ basketball program, the baseball program, and most recently in the boys’ basketball program.

Johnson, Bellarmine's new soccer coach, played at West Valley College and San Jose State. He earned his Bachelors and Masters in Kinesiology at SJSU.

He formerly coached Gavilan College, being named Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2012.

Johnson replaces Patrick Lowney who was not retained for the 2014-2015 season after leading the Bells to a CCS Division I co-title with Watsonville. Lowney had coached the Bells since 2001, winning nine West Catholic Athletic League titles and six section titles, including last year’s DI co-title.

Lowney’s 2002 team went 25-0, defeated Watsonville 2-0 in the section title game and earned a mythical national title.

New lacrosse coach Frady was the associated head men’s coach at Quinnipiac University from 2005 through 2014. As the defensive coordinator, he helped Qunnipiac to the Northeast Conference title game.

Tweeted Frady earlier this month after landing the Bells’ job: “Proud to announce that I have taken the varsity head coaching position @ Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. #NorCal here I come!!”

Before arriving at Quinnipiac, Frady coached at Fairfield University and his alma mater, Eastern Connecicut State University.
