Nathan Gaarder tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Troy to a 5-0 win over Ellis in the first round of the Kansas 2-1A state baseball tournament.
The second-seeded Trojans scored two runs in the first and added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to back the pitching of Gaarder, who struck out nine in posting the shutout.
Troy (20-3) advances to the semifinals and will take on the winner of the game between Little River and Elkhart. Ellis finished its season with a record of 12-9.
