Remington girls handle Halstead in opener

December 11, 2013

WHITEWATER, KS - The host Remington Broncos picked up an easy 63-35 win over the visiting Halstead Dragons Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Remington was in control throughout the game, and never let the Dragons gain any confidence.

Halstead took the early lead, and controlled the first quarter by shooting 4-of-8, and aided by the Broncos turning the ball over 10 times in just the first quarter alone.

In the second quarter, however, the Broncos took control, out-scoring the Dragons, 21-8.

Remington added to that by opening the third quarter with a 13-2 run, forcing turnovers and bad mistakes by the Dragons, while the Broncos capitalized on the mistakes they forced.

"We had some turnovers, then on defense, we had some situations we didn't handle very well," Remington coach Ben Wertenberger said. "Then the girls figured out some stuff, and we played pretty well.

Remington was led by junior post Kristyn Wedel who had 18 points for the Broncos. Also putting up impressive numbers was Kylee Schunn with 9.

"She got off to a real rough start," Wertenberger said. "She turned the ball over the first three times she touched it. She came back and played really well. That's a credit to her. She's got the skills. She moves well for a girl her size. We've got to get her the ball more."

"I thought we came out and played well defensively," Halstead coach Derek Schutte said. "We had a couple of breakdowns. We gave up a couple of turnovers. We gave up two or three layups. We just hung our heads.”

Halstead was led by senior guard Sydney Beat with 17 points.

"We have to be tougher mentally and we have to have confidence in ourselves," Schutte said. "We can't hang our heads."
