Weekly Rewind: Concord a team to be reckoned with; Campo closes in

November 6, 2013

When I spoke with Concord head coach Brian Hamilton before the season, he mentioned the youth of his team but also how happy he was with the group of players on the roster. ‘Hungry’ was the word that kept coming up from Hamilton.

After a season-opening 50-33 loss to Liberty (which was later awarded a Concord win because Liberty used an ineligible player), it was easy for us media types to think that the Minutemen wouldn’t be as strong as past Concord teams.

Nearly two months later, Concord is 6-1 – including the forfeit win - and handed undefeated Northgate, which had outscored opponents by an average margin of 44.3-14.7, its first loss.

In the 30-28 home win, the Minutemen held the Broncos to six first-half points, forced three turnovers, and junior quarterback Mitch Daniels tossed four touchdown passes, including three to fellow junior Mason Knight. Daniels finished the evening with 332 yards passing, with 192 going to Knight.

In the process, the Minutemen added to their already impressive home record, which is now 19-1 over the past four seasons.

Concord is a program that we tend to overlook. Maybe it’s because they share the same town as national power De La Salle, or play in a conference that is very weak at the bottom, or because Clayton Valley has taken over the top dog role in the DVAL.

Whatever the reason, we can’t deny the success the program has had under Hamilton. This will be the sixth consecutive winning season and the record is now 39-9 over the last four seasons. Those seasons include a 2010 NCS Division II title, a runner-up finish in 2011, and a semifinal berth last year in what was supposed to be a bit of a rebuilding campaign.

With Daniels, Knight, and running back Malik Blackburn returning next year, the 2014 season is expected to be another successful one.

As for 2013, the November 1 date at Clayton Valley Charter is looking a lot more interesting.

Campolindo a virtual lock to win the DFAL after 35-20 win at Las Lomas

Campolindo is in the driver’s seat for their its straight league title after a 35-20 win in Walnut Creek over Las Lomas.

Both teams struggled to run the ball consistently, but the Campolindo passing game was the much more efficient of the two.

Justin Dunn had his first 100+ yard receiving game since the opener and finished with 113 yards and a touchdown, while Andrew Zolintakis gave another flawless effort with 210 yards passing on 18 attempts, including three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Knights running back Zack Fulks did have two touchdowns, but was held to 62 yards after rushing for 396 in the previous three league wins.

The Campo defense also intercepted Shawn Hessler three times. Hessler threw just one interception the three Las Lomas league wins.

Las Lomas was the last DFAL team to beat Campolindo (30-28 on November 5, 2010) as the Cougars have now won 15 straight league games.

With Alhambra, Dougherty Valley, and Dublin remaining on the schedule, it appears Campo will have its second 10-0 regular season in three years.

Campolindo is averaging 35 points per game this year and has scored at least 24 points in 15 straight games. The Cougars are 14-1 during that span, including this season’s 7-0 start.

In a meeting of NCS Independents, De La Salle shuts down James Logan

No one is surprised when De La Salle thoroughly takes down good teams but the recent five-game stretch is still impressive.

Since their 21-14 win at Serra, the Spartans have won by an average score of 42.4-10.8 in wins over St. Mary’s-Stockton, Del Oro, San Ramon Valley, Servite, and James Logan.

In their 49-7 win over Logan, the Spartans triggered a running clock in the final quarter and took advantage of short fields against an impressive Colts defense.

John Velasco had a season-low 40 rushing yards but scored three touchdowns and is just 53 yards away from 1,000. Sophomore Anthony Hernandez had a game-high 93 yards and a touchdown for a Spartans team that is averaging a full yard-per-carry better than last year’s team. Keep in mind, this 2013 team has played a tougher schedule through seven games.

"We played really well tonight," Spartans lineman Brian Joyce told Prep2Prep’s Connor Callaway. "James Logan made it to North Coast last year, so you know they're a good team. We managed to keep rushing on them while also holding back their offense."

James Logan still has a lot of work to do on offense, particularly the passing game, but the good news is it looks like this series will continue and will be something that the Colts can build off in future years. Coach George Zuber knows all too well that you only get better by playing top opponents.

Serra’s defense stout again, Bellarmine wins CCS Open rematch, and Mitty, St. Francis coast to wins in the City

Valley Christian, playing without top back Kirk Johnson for the second straight game, was held to just 128 yards in a 28-7 Saturday loss at Serra.

This was just a 7-0 game with seconds left before halftime before Padres quarterback Matt Fa’aita found Austin Jackson for a 41-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds left.

“Aw man, that fourth down play pretty much changed the game,” Serra coach Patrick Walsh told Prep2Prep’s Adam Hegazy. “With our offense this year we don’t panic when its fourth-and-long because we have the opportunity to pick up the first down and thankfully that fourth down turned into a touchdown.”

It was one of two fourth-down touchdown passes for Fa’aita, who finished with 128 yards. Kava Cassidy also ran for 133 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries for his fifth straight 100+ yard rushing game.

The Warriors have just 213 yards over the last two weeks. Junior Tre McCloud, who had just five carries in the first five games, finished with 21 carries and 63 yards.

Bellarmine’s K.J. Carta-Samuels had his best day throwing the ball, completing 7-of-11 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, his fourth and fifth of the season, in a 42-28 win over St. Ignatius.

This was a rematch of last season’s CCS Open championship game, which was won by SI, 13-10.

The underclassmen continue to contribute as Kyle Macualey had a 91-yard touchdown catch and Anthony Guttadauro caught a touchdown pass and ran for another, giving Guttadauro five touchdowns over the last two weeks.

“I just run hard and follow my blocks, the offensive line gives me holes and I just run hard,” Guttadauro told Prep2Prep’s Jack Duffy. “On that pass, they were playing a zone and K.J. throws perfect balls and I just strolled into the end zone.”

Elijah Dale ran for over 100 yards and two scores and Joe Lang also scored two touchdowns for SI, including a 67-yard punt return that cut the lead to 35-28 in the final quarter. Lang has scored five times in the last two weeks, including two punt-return scores.

SI is in danger of falling to 1-7 with games versus top-five Bay Area teams, Serra and Mitty, the next two weeks.

Archbishop Mitty had a 42-0 lead in the third quarter in a 42-7 win at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Dakari Monroe and Chandler Ramirez each scored two touchdowns on the ground and the Monarchs have scored at least 28 points in five games of their 6-0 start.

After a 2-0 start, the Irish have lost four in a row and have been outscored, 141-31, during that streak.

St. Francis’ Landon Baty returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back as the Lancers built a 42-0 halftime advantage in a 49-15 win at Riordan.

William Fischer-Colbrie completed all six passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns and seven different Lancer players found the end zone.

The 5-1 Lancers have big games versus Mitty, Serra, and Valley Christian over the next three weeks.

Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo, and Burlingame win anticipated PAL matchups

After struggling most of the game, Sacred Heart Prep scored 15 unanswered in the final quarter for a 15-12 win at Menlo-Atherton.

It was a devastating loss for the Bears, who outgained the Gators, 372-264, and received a 109-yard, touchdown performance from Isiah Nash.

The Gators were averaging 296 yards rushing and were held to 112, but their defense deserves a ton of credit for keeping them in the game. That defense, led by Ben Burr-Kirven’s 19 tackles on Friday, has allowed just 31 points this year.

Menlo showed no let-up in a 42-10 win over underrated Sequoia.

Jack Heneghan completed 25-of-41 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns, while Jack Marren caught a pair of touchdown passes and a two-point conversion.

The 5-1 Knights have scored at least 42 points in every game this season and now have their biggest test when they host Terra Nova on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers stayed undefeated with a 49-0 thrashing of South City, behind 357 yards passing and five touchdowns from junior Anthony Gordon.

While the Bay Division is still up for grabs, the PAL Ocean may be Burlingame’s to lose after the Panthers’ Andrew Kennedy returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a 33-17 win at Aragon.

Pittsburg wins BVAL showdown at Liberty, Freedom escapes in a close one with Heritage, and Deer Valley stays unbeaten

Liberty suffered its first loss on the field with a 28-13 decision versus Pittsburg but, in the process, gained some newfound respect amongst its BVAL counterparts.

Those expecting the Lions, who haven’t played as tough of a schedule as many BVAL foes, to lay down, had to be impressed by the Liberty effort.

Liberty held Harris Ross to 36 rushing yards in first half, but the recent Oregon State commit finished with 173 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He set the tone in the second half with a 49-yard run on the half’s first play when Pitt had a 7-0 lead. Ross, who was banged up in the Heritage game, did have to limp off the field at one point in this one before returning.

Pittsburg won the battle on the ground with 287 yards rushing and holding the Lions to just 94 and that was helped by Jaylyn Morgan’s 113 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan rushed for just 44 yards in the season’s first six contests.

This game did mark the return of Pirates quarterback Keith Walker, who had been out since the opening week. Walker, though, had to leave the game because of injury.

The Pirates held the Lions offense to under 200 yards prior to the final drive of the game and Liberty standout Ivan Oseguera did throw two picks, but also had 97 yards passing and 76 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Liberty, which is 4-3 instead of 6-1 because of two forfeit losses, still has to win one more game to become playoff eligible. The Lions play three straight road games versus Deer Valley, Heritage, and Freedom to close out the season as they look for their first winning season in eight years.

There aren’t many teams that have played harder and felt more snake-bit than Heritage. The Patriots dropped to 0-7 and are 0-3 in games decided by seven points or less after Joe Mixon scored on a 1-yard plunge with 28.7 seconds left to give Freedom a 28-21 win.

It was the second straight year that this matchup went down to the wire after Mixon sealed a 31-24 win last season on an interception in the end zone. Mixon finished with 33 carries for 143 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one receiving.

Heritage, meanwhile, had just 34 yards rushing and its playoff hopes appear shot with this loss.

The best news for the Falcons might be sophomore quarterback Joe Sweeney. Sweeney went 10-for-10 for 138 yards in the second half and finished with 228 yards and two touchdown passes.

Freedom, now 3-4 and 1-1 in league, plays Pittsburg after beating the Pirates in a classic last season, 49-48. The Falcons need to win two of their final three games to assure themselves a playoff berth. This likely means a win over Pitt or Liberty.

Deer Valley, as expected, hammered Antioch, 49-7.

The Wolverines have scored at least 35 points in each game and are averaging 45.9 points per game.

Senior Kyle McDonald had 198 yards rushing and three touchdowns on only seven carries. It was first 100+ yard game of the season for McDonald.

Nsimba Webster had two more rushing touchdowns and did throw his first interception of the season in 92 attempts. He completed his other five passes for 129 yards.

The defense, though, has allowed just 14 total points in its two BVAL wins. Malik Hutchings added 10 more tackles and fellow senior Matt Gavello finished with 11. Robert Taylor came through with his third interception of the season.

Monte Vista nearly upsets Cal, while San Ramon Valley and Amador Valley escape with wins over Livermore foes

It’s been a rough season for Monte Vista, but the Mustangs nearly upset California before Cameron Owen’s 31-yard touchdown run with 1:03 left in a 31-28 Grizzlies win.

The Grizzlies finished the night with a 310-14 rushing edge, including 97 yards and a score from Simi Hingano.

Owen passed for a season-high 191 passing yards and season-high 69 rushing yards, including 65 on the winning 92-yard drive.

Cal finished with 501 total yards. The Grizzlies had averaged a modest 337 yards in their three previous EBAL games.

A positive for Monte Vista was the return of quarterback Nikita Zamora, who has been limited the last two games because of a knee strain. Zamora didn’t start but led a go-ahead 99-yard touchdown drive in the final quarter and finished with 311 yards passing and four touchdowns, including two and 97 yards to Eric Dopperpuhl.

The 1-6 Mustangs will have their first losing season since they were 3-7 in 1999, but can still play spoiler with rival San Ramon in the season finale on November 8.

Cal, now 4-0 in league, can all but assure itself a league title with a home win over San Ramon Valley on Friday.

San Ramon Valley’s Marcus de la Pena went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark with a 30-carry, 139-yard performance in a 31-26 win at Granada.

“My credit goes to my O-line and all the coaches,” de la Pena told Prep2Prep’s Konnor McIntosh. “We just take every game one game at a time and try not to get ahead of ourselves.”

Matt Winaker passed for 236 yards and two touchdowns for a Wolves team that is averaging 42.7 points during their 3-0 EBAL start.

Matadors receiver Javonn Williams had 135 yards receiving and a touchdown.

One big concern for 4-3 Granada, as it tries to become playoff eligible, is the health of quarterback Tyler Offill, who was helped off the field with an apparent leg injury.

Livermore nearly ended an eight-game EBAL losing streak, but Amador Valley’s Mitchell Copenhaver scored on an 11-yard run in the final quarter to give the Dons a 10-7 win. It was just Copenhaver’s second carry of the night.

The Dons’ Michael White was the leading rusher on the night, finishing with 116 yards on 22 carries. White now has 807 yards on the season for a Dons team that stopped a two-game skid where they were outscored by 50 points.

“We just never give up. Our defense played great, kept us in the game,” White told Prep2Prep’s Chris Jackson. “Even though our offense couldn’t get a drive going. It’s all on our defense to never quit.”

Tim Harris had the only Cowboys touchdown and over 100 yards from scrimmage.

Encinal, San Leandro lone 2-0 teams in the WACC Foothill, while Piedmont appears to be the top dog in the Shoreline

Encinal recorded a shutout for the second straight week and has allowed 17 total points during a four-game win streak after a 10-0 win over Berkeley, which has scored just 21 points in its last four games.

The Jets are 6-1 and 2-0 in the WACC Foothill despite averaging 16 points per game.

San Leandro is now 2-0 in league and 3-4 overall after a 39-0 win at Hayward. Junior Stephen Johnson continues to play well as he completed 7-of-9 passes for 139 yards and four touchdowns, while also running for 75 yards and a score. Rueben Baker caught two of those touchdowns, his first scoring receptions since September 13.

Demareyeh Lane ran for 73 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a fumble recovery in Castro Valley’s 43-14 thumping of Bishop O’Dowd. The Trojans stopped a five-game losing streak and 1-6 O’Dowd will have their first losing season since 2009.

As for the Shoreline, I thought it was Alameda’s division to lose, but Piedmont is in the driver’s seat heading into a big game versus Tennyson on Friday.

Piedmont won, 35-27, at Alameda as sophomore Gabe Watson rushed for 183 yards and four touchdowns.

Casa Grande stays unbeaten, Montgomery survives, and the quarterbacks shine in the NBL

Defending league champ Rancho Cotate suffered its third blowout loss of the season with a 42-13 defeat at undefeated Casa Grande, which stopped a three-game losing streak in the head-to-head series.

JaJuan Lawson passed for 241 yards and three long touchdown passes, while running for 94 yards and another score. Lawson has just two turnovers this season, and hasn’t thrown an interception in his last five games which spans 88 attempts.

In an eye-opening result, Montgomery needed three overtimes for a 38-35 home win over 2-5 Ukiah.

It was the second overtime game in three weeks for the 6-1 Vikings, who received the game-winning 21-yard field goal from Josh Lenney.

It was another standout performance for backup quarterback R.J. Flores, who tossed four touchdowns and no interceptions, while Logan Francavilla rushed for 170 yards. Francavilla is just 49 yards shy of 1,000 on the season.

Cardinal Newman trailed by two touchdowns early and outscored Maria Carrillo 34-7 in the second half for a 48-27 win.

Keaton Dunsford threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns, while Ryan O’Leary caught three of the scores and finished with 12 catches for 219 yards.

Windsor’s Colin McAlvain completed 15 of 18 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 59-19 triumph versus Santa Rosa.

SCVAL: Monta Vista grabs stranglehold of the El Camino and blowouts are the story in the De Anza

Monta Vista is 3-0 in the El Camino and nobody else has more than one league win after the Matadors 28-14 win over Cupertino.

The Mats trailed 14-7 at halftime and didn’t pass for a yard, but didn’t need to with a ground game that produced 439 yards, including Justin Sena’s 302 yards and four touchdowns.

"He's amazing," Cupertino coach Chris Arnold told Prep2Prep’s John Murphy. "Everyone knows he's the one you have to stop, but how do you do it? He's a 200-pound bowling ball, rolling very hard."

Los Gatos has won four straight and outscored its opponents, 156-21, after a 44-7 victory over Mountain View. Corey Olivet scored three touchdowns in the first half, including a 57-yard punt return and a 38-yard receiving touchdown. San Diego State quarterback commit Nick Bawden didn’t play and Dru Brown stepped in with three touchdown passes on only seven attempts.

Milpitas led 33-0 at halftime in a 46-7 win at Santa Clara. John Keller threw for three long touchdown passes, including two to Tre Hartley.

Wilcox, after plenty of close calls, also jumped out to a 33-0 lead at halftime in a 40-0 win versus Fremont.

Malcolm Davis ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns and Keller Chryst passed for four scores and 240 yards as Palo Alto outscored Saratoga, 55-21. Davis had just four carries in the previous five games before his 13-carry effort on Friday.

Acalanes and Dublin pick up their first league wins

Acalanes led 35-7 in a 42-28 home win versus Dougherty Valley for the Dons first DFAL win of the year.

Dougherty Valley’s 332 rushing yards weren’t enough as Dons junior quarterback Casey Harrington stole the show with 369 yards passing, completing 24 of 30 attempts and four touchdowns.

Andrew Bosshart caught two of those scores and finished with 127 yards receiving, while Peter Mitchell caught a touchdown pass and ran for 91 yards and two scores.

Lanrae Adelekan did run for 165 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats, who have lost two in a row and have allowed 139 points over their last four games.

The 5-3 Dons have winnable games the next two weeks as they try to finish 3-3 in league. The defense, however, has allowed 31.5 points per game in four DFAL contests.

Dublin led 21-0 stopped a three-game skid with a 28-14 win at Alhambra. Junior Josh Nobida threw three touchdown passes to Jabari Jefferson for the 3-5 Gaels.

Clayton Valley and College Park roll to easy wins in the DVAL

One of the biggest upsets of the weekend was that Clayton Valley scored just 35 points in their 35-0 blanking of Ygnacio Valley. The Ugly Eagles worked on the passing game as Gabe Taylor completed 9-of-12 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns.

Considering this was going to be an easy win and the 28-0 lead at halftime, running back Miles Harrison saw limited work. Harrison had two carries for 20 yards and a touchdown.

The big story in the box score was Xavier Crawford hauling in a 39-yard touchdown catch. Crawford was Pittsburg’s top receiver last year and is also a talented defensive back. The rich get richer at Clayton Valley.

College Park rushed for 502 yards in a 47-7 rout of Mt. Diablo. Three different players rushed for 100 or more yards, including Ray Jackson’s 171 yards and a touchdown. It was his third straight game of 100 or more yards.

Dmitri Salido also had three touchdowns and 101 yards.

McClymonds escapes with a win in the OAL and more NCS Results

• McClymonds was held to just 187 yards and survived a scare with a 20-14 win over Fremont at Curt Flood Field. Lavon Washington returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score and Lavance Warren, who missed most of the game because of a knee injury, ran for 46 yards in the final quarter for the 4-2 Warriors.

• Marin Catholic’s Morgan Mahalak has 16 touchdown passes in MCAL play and the Wildcats are 8-0 overall after a 41-0 win over Justin-Siena. Andrew Celis helped out with a terrific one-handed catch and Mahalak appeared to escape a serious knee injury, which caused him to miss two series.

• Analy led 28-0 after the first quarter in a 49-0 rout of El Molino. The 7-1 Tigers have scored at least 44 points in five straight games.

• In the TCAL Rock, Vince Volpatti of Valley Christian-Dublin rushed for 311 yards on 28 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 40-14 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent. Volpatti has rushed for 518 yards over the last two weeks and is over a thousand on the season for the 4-3 Vikings. The Bruins Jalen Canty, a Washington basketball commit, did record his 17th sack.

• Salesian stopped a three-game skid with a 14-3 home win over St. Mary’s. De’Angelo Hernandez contributed 113 rushing yards and a touchdown.

• Washington is 4-0 in the MVAL after a 40-0 hammering of Moreau Catholic, who was without junior back Jason Hinton because of illness. The Mariners were held to 21 rushing yards.

• Also in the MVAL, Irvington quarterback Jack Shank passed for 161 yards, four touchdowns, two two-point conversions, and also ran for 72 yards and two scores in the Vikings 47-29 win over Kennedy-Fremont.

Other Notable Games in the CCS:

• Gilroy’s Brandon Boyd and Live Oak’s Trevor Bearden continue to be two of the top 10 rushers in the state.

• The state’s fifth leading rusher, Boyd, has 1,731 yards after a 212-yard, five touchdown performance in the Mustangs 54-14 win over Pajaro Valley.

• Bearden has 1,523 yards on the season, which is eighth best in California. Bearden ran for 300+ yards for the third time this season and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final two minutes in the Acorns’ 21-14 win over Westmont. Bearden carried the ball a season-high 39 times for 316 yards as Live Oak improved to 5-1.

• Piedmont Hills quarterback Anthony McBride passed for five touchdowns in the Pirates 37-6 win over Santa Teresa.

• Because of the emergence of other teams and Carmel’s weak schedule, the Padres dropped out of our rankings but cruised to a 46-17 win over Stevenson. Connor Marden completed 23-of-29 attempts for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

• Leland and Pioneer are both 3-0 in the Mt. Hamilton heading into their showdown on Friday. Pioneer coasted to a 41-23 win against Independence as Anthony Logan rushed for three touchdowns.

• Like Carmel, Leland is just outside of our Bay Area rankings after a 24-6 win over Sobrato.

Players of the Week

Offense: Mitchell Daniels, Concord. Daniels already provides leadership for the Minutemen, but the junior can play, too. Daniels threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns in a 30-28 win over Northgate, giving him 25 touchdown passes on the season.

Defense: Andrew Kennedy, Burlingame. Kennedy tied for a team-high eight tackles in a big 33-17 win over Aragon, but the story was his two interceptions returned for touchdowns that may have given the Panthers a PAL Ocean title.

Special Teams: Mitchell Allan, San Ramon Valley. Allan delivered three short field goals in the Wolves 31-26 road win at Granada.

Recruiting News and other tidbits

• Some of the top names have de-committed from their original choices. Pittsburg running back Harris Ross switched from Hawaii to Oregon State.

• El Cerrito linebacker Derik Calhoun de-committed from USC and was on a visit to Arizona State this weekend.

• Speaking of Arizona State, Gauchos teammate Jalen Harvey is no longer committed to Cal and, according to Phil Jensen, is heading to the Sun Devils.

• Deer Valley’s Malik Hutchings was offered by Portland State, who recently also offered Wolverines twins, Nsimba and Nzuzi Webster.

• The Chronicle’s Tom Fitzgerald wrote an interesting piece on the sport specialization of many high school athletes and quoted many coaches, including Miramonte girls basketball coach Kelly Sopak, Mitty’s Sue Phillips, Presentation volleyball coach Sue Dvorak, Monte Vista baseball coach Bill Piona, and former Campolindo athletic director Bob Wilson.

Sacred Heart Cathedral football coach Ken Peralta: "A good, strong program, it's not going to affect that much but it's really a disservice to the kids. It's sad. High school sports are about building the whole person. This cuts off one of the arms."

Serra football coach Patrick Walsh: “I see sports as an opportunity to help my son become a healthier, better-adjusted citizen in the world. He has a .0001 percent chance of getting a football scholarship. There's a lot more academic money out there than athletic money."

They Said It
