CCS Friday roundup: Westmont stays unbeaten, San Benito holds off LG, and more

September 9, 2017

Cameron Rottler threw for four touchdowns, Troy Rottler scored four times, and Westmont rolled past Del Mar, 43-14, to stay unbeaten in non-league play.

The Rottler twins got things started early for the Warriors, when Cameron ran for a 10-yard score in the first quarter, giving Westmont an early 6-0 lead.

After that, it was three straight scoring connections from Cameron to Troy, as the Warriors established a 33-13 halftime advantage.

If Del Mar had any thoughts of coming back, Westmont ended those thoughts at the beginning of the third quarter, when Cameron Rottler connected with Ryan Poirier for his fourth touchdown pass of the night. The senior quarterback then added a 35-yard field goal for the final points of the game, as the Warriors improved to 3-0.

San Benito holds off late Los Gatos surge

A fast start and a 21-0 lead midway through the third quarter proved to be just enough for the host Balers, as San Benito held off Los Gatos, 21-20, in non-league action on Friday night.

Senior quarterback Bobby Nelson’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Williams jump-started the Wildcats’ comeback late in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 21-7. Five minutes later, Nelson found Cole Patterson for the seven-yard touchdown, making it a one-score game with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.

Midway through the fourth, Nelson threw his third touchdown pass of the night, this time to Williams from four yards out. Los Gatos decided to go for the lead with a two-point conversion, however, and the pass fell incomplete, allowing the Balers to hold on to a one-point lead.

Los Gatos drove to midfield on its last possession of the game, but the Balers defense held on for the one-point victory.

It was a scoreless first quarter in the game, but San Benito’s Jonny Gonzalez got things started with a two-yard scoring run in the second quarter, following his 46-yard run earlier in the drive. Slade Wilson then connected with Gio Gionnotta for a 34-yard touchdown with 2:13 left in the first half, giving the Balers a 14-0 lead at the half.

The San Benito defense played big early in the game, holding Los Gatos to just 87 yards of offense in the first two quarters. Matt Ramon then extended the lead to 21 points with his 21-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The LG defense held tough after that, but the comeback fell just short.

Gonzalez finished with a game-high 131 yards on 22 carries to pace the San Benito offense.

Santa Teresa outlasts Saratoga

Ethan Janto’s 50-yard rushing touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion pass to Gabriel San Agustin, midway through the third quarter, proved to be the difference in Santa Teresa’s 21-14 win over Saratoga.

Janto’s run gave the Saints a 21-7 lead at the time, but Saratoga cut into the lead midway through the fourth quarter, when Nikolas Rositano ran for the seven-yard score. The Falcons then drove into Santa Teresa territory on the ensuing offensive possession, but a big interception at the Saints’ 23-yard line thwarted a scoring opportunity, enabling the Saints to hold on for the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, San Agustin got Santa Teresa on the scoreboard first, early in the second quarter, with his two-yard scoring run. Two straight Saratoga possessions then resulted in turnovers, including an interception by Jason Taylor and a fumble recovery by Andrew Schulteiss, and the Saints cashed in on the second chance, when Jared Vasquez hit Armondo Parks for the 16-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead.

Saratoga closed the gap with a one-yard scoring run courtesy of Robert Scott, before the Saints put the game back out of reach.

San Mateo dominates final three quarters for win over Los Altos

After a sluggish start and a scoreless first quarter, San Mateo scored 21 points in the next 12 minutes and rolled to the 34-0 win on Friday.

Da’Hareeha Allen’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Grant got things started for the 3-0 Bearcats, and five minutes later, Jose Ontiveros connected with Grant for the 40-yard score.

A quick two-minute drill drive resulted in another Ontiveros to Grant connection, this time from 35 yards out, and San Mateo cruised into halftime with a 21-0 lead.

Los Altos drove into Bearcats’ territory midway through the third quarter, but an interception at the San Mateo 15-yard line launched an 85-yard scoring drive, which culminated in Ontiveros hitting Jake Jeffries for a 57-yard scoring strike.

Jonathan Ramirez’ 22-yard touchdown run, with eight minutes left in the game, put the final touches on the victory.

Wildcatz stay unbeaten

Watsonville got a pair of touchdowns each from Johnny Bravo and Evan Delozier, as the Wildcatz rolled to the 35-14 win over Greenfield, moving to 3-0 on the season.

The ‘Catz led 35-0 before the defensive substitutions gave Greenfield a chance to get on the scoreboard.
