Palo Alto jumped out to a 20-point lead early in the second half but had to withstand a furious Monta Vista rally to post a 41-35 victory over host Monta Vista Friday night.
The win was the first in league play for the Vikings (2-4, 1-1 SCVAL), while the Matadors (1-5, 0-3) are still looking for their first league victory.
Justin Hull completed 9 of 17 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown and also contributed a 40-yard interception return for a score that gave the Vikings some breathing room at 41-28 late in the fourth quarter.
Palo Alto jumped out to a 27-7 lead early in the third quarter when Hull hit Eli Givens for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
Hull also ran for a score and Jon Martinez added 176 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Vikings, who travel to No. 2 Los Gatos Friday night.
Monta Vista, which was led by Max McCann (91 yards rushing, 2 TDs, 98-yard kickoff return), visits Saratoga Friday night.
