WATSONVILLE - Quarterback Jonah Mendez accounted for three touchdowns, as King City cruised past St. Francis-Watsonville on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams, 35-0.
Mendez completed 9-of-16 passes for 213 yards and two scores, while also running for another, on a four-yard plunge in the second quarter to make the score 14-0 at halftime. His 72-yard scoring hook-up with Devin Morales in the first quarter opened the season with the first points in the CCS.
Morales finished the game with three catches for 135 yards, while the Mustangs had a balanced attack on the ground as well. Felix Dominguez ran for 61 yards and two touchdowns, including a 35-yarder, on just five carries, while Cesar Chaves ran the ball eight times for 59 yards.
King City (1-0) hosts Greenfield next Friday, while St. Francis (0-1) heads to Yerba Buena.
