In what coach Matt Oetinger best describes as a "season of firsts" for Christopher's girls soccer program, the Cougars added to things on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Leland in the first round of the CCS Division I playoffs.
The Cougars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Natalie Smith's corner kick was placed in the net by Isabella Jimenez, in the second minute of the match. Smith was the key figure in Christopher's second goal, which also came in the first half.
In the 32nd minute, Smith took a pass on a build-up from fellow sophomore Samantha Rabusin, and drilled one into the net from close to 30 yards away.
"We've been trying to get Natalie to take more shots," Oetinger commented. "She is a very good offensive mid player for us, but usually tries to set up other players."
The two first half goals earned Christopher its first playoff victory in program history, following the first-ever league title for the Cougars.
Christopher now faces three seed Leigh, this Saturday at 1 pm on the road. The Longhorns beat Prospect, 3-0, in the first round.
