Visiting Notre Dame-San Jose broke open a close game late to post a 58-48 victory over Gunderson Friday December 14 in non-league girls basketball action. Sophomore center Carly Turner (12 points) and junior captain Nnenna Ajawara (11 points) led the way for the Regents, who improved to 4-4 with the victory. Despite 34 points from senior Irene Chavez, the Grizzlies dropped to 2-1.
Notre Dame led by just one, 39-38, at the end of the third quarter before finishing strong to win by double digits. Chavez did her best to keep Gunderson in the game, hitting 10-of-20 field-goal attempts and 13-of-15 free throws to go along with 11 steals. Sophomores Mia Medina (9 rebounds) and Lira Ndifon (8 rebounds) also contributed for the Grizzlies.
Senior guard Nicole Watanabe added nine points on three 3-pointers and sophomore center Rachel Schneider also dropped in nine points for Notre Dame, which will participate in the Newark Optimist Holiday Classic at Newark Memorial over the holiday. Gunderson will participate in a pair of tournaments, including its own Lady Grizz Winter Classic Dec. 19-22 and the Dons Club Holiday Tournament at Del Mar starting Dec. 27.
