Line Latu scampered around left end for a 10-yard score in overtime and Larry Campbell kicked the winning extra point as host San Mateo defeated El Camino, 21-20, in overtime Friday afternoon. The victory clinches second place in the PAL-Lake Division for the Bearcats (5-4, 4-1), who have won five of their past six games.
El Camino (5-4, 3-2) came up a failed extra point in overtime short in its bid to finish second behind league champ Capuchino (5-4, 4-0). Junior Ian Santos gave El Camino a 20-14 lead in overtime with a 1-yard quarterback sneak, but the Colts failed on the extra-point attempt.
San Mateo jumped out to a 14-0 first-half lead on the strength of a 5-yard run by quarterback Taylor Sanft and a 22-yard run by Latu. But El Camino fought back in the second half, shutting down the Bearcats and forcing overtime on a 3-yard TD pass from Santos to Taj Childs with 5:52 left in the game.
Both teams finish their season with non-league games next week as San Mateo visits Burlingame and El Camino travels to South San Francisco.
