Junior tailback Delshawn Mitchell rushed for five touchdowns as Wilcox moved into a tie for second place in the SCVAL-De Anza Division with a 40-22 win at Homestead Friday night. The Chargers (6-3, 4-2 SCVAL-DA) are now tied with Milpitas and Los Gatos for second place in the hypercompetitive De Anza division, a game behind Palo Alto. A loss by the first-place Vikings next week against Santa Clara could potentially set up a four-way tie for first place.
Homestead actually led 22-21 at halftime before a second-half onslaught by the Chargers put the game away. Junior quarterback Kenny Dipko hit tight end Sione Finefuiaki on a 23-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to put Wilcox up for good, 27-22, and Mitchell ran for a couple of scores in the fourth quarter to ice it.
Senior quarterback Mark Hirschbek threw a pair of touchdown passes and Yongsuk Kim ran 38 yards for a score for the Mustangs (3-6, 1-5), who finish the season at Milpitas next Friday night. Wilcox closes the regular season with a visit from Mountain View next Friday night.
