Aptos spotted visiting Scotts Valley an early 13-point lead but recovered to score the game's final 28 points in a 36-21 win Friday night. With the win, the Mariners (5-2, 3-0) moved into a first-place tie in the SCCAL with San Lorenzo Valley. The Falcons (1-5, 0-2) have now dropped five games in a row.
Scotts Valley raced out to a 21-8 lead on the strength of a pair of touchdown runs (20, 70 yards) by Ari Wargon and a two-yard run by Garrett Johnson with 10:26 left in the second quarter. However, Scotts Valley was unable to score again as Aptos closed out the half with 21 straight points to take a 28-21 lead into the break. Elijah Marta scored both of his touchdowns in the second quarter, including a one-yarder with one second left in the first half.
Brodie Bennett added three rushing touchdowns for the Mariners, including a 40-yard run with 10:15 to play in the third quarter for the game's final points.
Aptos travels to Soquel (5-1, 2-0) Friday night (7:30) in a key SCCAL matchup of teams undefeated in league play. Scotts Valley hosts San Lorenzo Valley (6-1, 3-0) Saturday afternoon (2 pm).
