Lynbrook overcame an early deficit to score 27 unanswered points en route to a 27-6 win at James Lick Friday night. The score was a bit misleading, as the Vikings battled through a hard-fought 48 minutes of football to post the victory.
With four minutes left to go within the first quarter, the Comets acquired the upper hand, taking advantage of a fumbled kickoff return by the Vikings and scoring a running touchdown immediately afterward to take a 6-0 lead.
Neither team scored again in the rest of the first half as the defenses controlled the game. Each team was able to drive up and down the field, but the defenses stiffened near the end zone.
After halftime, the Vikings began to make a comeback with solid offensive drives against the Comet defense. A short pass from quarterback Gabe Wagner-Rosales to fullback Tim Wallis resulted in an 88-yard touchdown dash and propelled the Vikings to a 7-6 lead with 7:27 left in the third quarter and served as a catalyst for their rally.
The two hooked up in similar fashion with under a minute left in the third quarter to put Lynbrook up, 14-6.
In the fourth quarter, the Viking defense was able to stop the Comet offense with more ease by effectively stopping a multitude of dive and sweep attempts by the Comets. James Lick contributed to the Vikings’ efforts by coughing up two fumbles, each of which was returned for a touchdown - one by Kyle Williams and the other by Wallis, who finished with three TDs on the night.
The Vikings (2-1) look for a third straight win next week at Wilcox, while the Comets (0-2) continue their fight for a first victory in two weeks against Del Mar.
