Donovan goes the distance in Riordan's 2-0 win over South City

April 5, 2012

Senior righthander Sean Donovan tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout to lead Archbishop Riordan to a 2-0 non-league victory over visiting South San Francisco Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Crusaders' record to 10-6 overall, while the Warriors fall to 3-11.

Donovan struck out three and walked one in posting the shutout. South San Francisco starter Joe Marcucci also pitched well, tossing a six-inning complete game and allowing just three hits and three walks to go along with four strikeouts. Marcucci was perfect for the first 4 2/3 innings before Matt Craig singled in the fifth for Riordan's first baserunner.

The fifth inning was Marcucci's undoing as Riordan scored both of its runs in that frame. Second baseman Matt Melendez led off with a walk and moved to third when Chris Trugueiro reached on a South City error. Catcher Matt Craig then reached on an infield single to score Melendez with the game's first run and move Trugeiro to second. Outfielder Chris Davis then brough Trugueiro home with a base hit to make it 2-0.

The Crusaders are taking a break from WCAL play during the spring holiday and do not play again until April 13, when they visit Sacred Heart Prep. South City takes on Washington (SF) on Saturday in a non-league game.
