Senior Jay Slaney scored 23 points and junior DeAngelo Blackwell added 21 to lead host Homestead to a 66-62 win over Fremont in a key SCVAL-De Anza boys basketball game Friday night. With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 13-5 overall (4-3 SCVAL-DA); the Firebirds dropped to 13-6 (5-2).
Slaney hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor and also made 9-of-11 free throws to lead the way for Homestead, which avenged a defeat to Fremont three weeks ago. Blackwell nailed 3-of-4 3-pointers to complement the inside attack provided by Slaney, who also grabbed seven rebounds.
Mo Abdulrasul led Fremont with 27 points while Jake Burriss added 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Firebirds, who dropped into a tie for first place with Palo Alto, host Los Gatos Tuesday night (7 pm). Homestead travels to Wilcox Tuesday night (7 pm).
