Riordan evens record at 2-2 with win at Westmoor

December 11, 2011

Geru Mabrey scored a game-high 15 points and Anthony Castillo added 12 as the Riordan basketball team overcame a slow start to post a 56-48 win in a non-league game at Westmoor Friday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve their record to 2-2. Westmoor drops to 2-3.

Westmoor led 22-9 midway through the second quarter when Riordan made a run to cut the deficit to 27-25 at the half. The Crusaders took the lead, 35-33, on a layup by Mabrey with 4:28 left in the third quarter and pulled away as Castillo hit a three-pointer on the next possession to extend the advantage to 38-33. The Rams were able to cut the deficit to 43-41 early in the fourth quarter but never led again as Riordan went on a 6-0 run to increase the cushion back to eight.

Mabrey (10 points in the second half) and Castillo (11) did most of their damage in the second half, as Riordan out-scored Westmoor 31-21 to complete the comeback. Daniel Selsor added 10 points for the Crusaders, including a pair of three-pointers. Maynard Raymundo and Wai Min led the way for the Rams with 10 points apiece, with Min adding 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

Riordan will next participate in the Merv Harris Classic Saturday afternoon (4:30) at Serra, where they will face Menlo-Atherton. WCAL teams Saint Francis and Serra will also participate in the event, with the Lancers facing off against Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) at 6 pm and the host Padres taking on St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda) at 7:30 pm.
