Encinal defeated visiting Alameda, 14-10, Friday night for the seventh straight time in the annual Island Bowl pitting the two East Bay rivals. Isaiah Hunter scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter and the score held up in the defensive struggle.
The host Jets improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Hornets dropped to 3-2.
The Hornets took a 10-7 lead with 4:54 left in the third quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Nick Chen, but Encinal answered right back on the next drive. Jordan Parker got the Jets off on the right foot with a 60-yard return on the kickoff and the Jets methodically worked their way on a 30-yard drive into the end zone.
Alameda led 7-0 in the first quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Hernandez to Keelan Doss. The lead lasted until midway in the second quarter, when Encinal tied it on a six-yard run by Hunter to make it 7-7.
It was the final non-league tuneup for both teams, as they begin league play this coming week. Encinal visits Bishop O'Dowd in a WAC-Foothill matchup, while Alameda visits Tennyson in a WAC-Shoreline contest.
