Senior Matt Gorgolinski pitched deep into the game to lead Serra to a 5-3 victory over Bellarmine in the West Catholic Athletic League Opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon. The Padres (9-1, 3-0) finished the week with two more wins to take an early lead in the WCAL race while the Bells (8-2, 2-1) also won a pair of games.
Gorgolinski (4-0) allowed just four hits and two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out four Bells along the way. Serra pushed across two runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, as junior Neil Sterling hit a two-run homer and senior Michael Tinsley (2-for-3) drove in two runs apiece. Junior Matt Blais worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his fourth save.
Senior Jake Whipple drove in all three runs for Bellarmine, going 3-for-3 with a double. Senior Justin Calomeni added two hits and two runs scored for the Bells. Kevin Crane (3-1) went the distance for Bellarmine and took the loss despite allowing just four earned runs and striking out five.
